Intergenerational
Matching:
Little Brothers – Friends of the
Elderly in Boston has committed itself to enriching
the lives of the elderly and their volunteers by
fostering friendships that celebrate life. Such
friendships are linked together by shared laughter,
time-honored stories, and cherished dreams that teach
us about ourselves. Volunteers are matched with elder
friends to develop one-on-one long-term relationships.
Volunteers commit to be in touch with their elder
friend regularly - typically 3-4 times a month.

Holiday Visitation And
Meal Delivery
On major holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas,
Easter), volunteers provide companionship and deliver
nutritious meals, food packages, and flowers to our
elder friends. For our more mobile elder friends,
volunteers and staff serve as hosts, cooks, and
drivers for holiday parties held at the Little Brother’s
house in Jamaica Plain.

Special Events
There are many other opportunities for volunteers
and elders to get together to share good food and good
times. We have a summer picnic and "Breakfast
Club" meetings. We have celebrations for special
days like Martin Luther King Day, St. Patrick’s Day,
Rosh Hashanah, and Chanukah. We have parties with our
elder friends on special days such as Valentine’s
Day and Halloween.

On-call emergency
services
Volunteers and staff provide valuable and essential
social support while they assist elders with the tasks
of daily living – escorting them to medical and
other appointments, shopping, banking, getting
prescriptions filled, and running errands. Volunteers
also deliver food packages from the Emergency Food
Pantry.

|
Telephone reassurance
Volunteers and staff maintain frequent contact with
frail elders to reassure them and check on their well
being via telephone calls. If the elder is not reached
after three calls, a staff member or volunteer of
Little Brothers-Friends of the Elderly will make a
visit to their home or apartment.

|
Elder Advocacy
Volunteers and staff advocate on behalf of their
elder friends, helping them to secure needed services
that Little Brothers-Friends of the Elderly does not
provide. These services include legal aid,
housekeeping services, medical and mental health
assessment, food stamps, fuel assistance, etc.
