To get involved Contact us today. We would love to hear from you.
Intergenerational Matching Volunteer – spend 3 or 4 hours a month with a particular elder, providing companionship, a listening ear, someone to share walks and coffee with. (This is a one year commitment.)
On-Call Emergency Services Volunteer – provide medical escorts for elders who need more than just door to door transport. Volunteers get elders to their appointments, help them navigate the confusing hospital maze, provide companionship in the waiting room, and get the elder settled back home again. On-Call volunteers may also help with our Food Pantry deliveries, and food shopping or banking escorts. (A car is needed.) Volunteers can sign up for various medical escorts as their schedule allows. Medical escorts can take anywhere from 3 to 6 hours; food drop off takes only about an hour.
Holiday Celebrations Volunteer – Holidays celebrated are Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine’s, Easter/Passover, Mother’s & Father’s Day. Spend time during the holidays bringing companionship, nutritious meals and flowers to elders throughout Boston. Many elders are accessible via public transportation. Volunteers should allot approximately 3 hours for this program (this includes travel time).
Holiday Party Volunteers & Drivers - For our more mobile elder friends, volunteers and staff serve as hosts, cooks, and provide transportation to holiday parties. These luncheons coincide with the holidays listed above. Volunteers should plan on 5 hours of time.
Holiday Bakers –Volunteer bakers are needed to prepare the turkeys that are a big part of the Thanksgiving and Christmas meals, Thanksgiving pies, Christmas cookies, and desserts and brownies for the Easter/Passover programs
Holiday Prep Volunteers - Volunteer help is always needed to get everything ready for our various Holiday Celebrations: from phone calls to elders and volunteers to wrapping gifts and setting up the program sites, the more hands available the better! The schedule is flexible leading up to the holidays, and we can use any amount of time you have to give.
Social Activities Volunteer – help us host our semi-monthly gatherings by becoming ‘Chef for the Day’ (planning and cooking the meal), providing entertainment for an event, or by offering transportation for 2 or more elders for an event. Events are held one Wednesday morning and one Saturday a month.
Volunteers should plan on about 5 hours per program.
Telephone Reassurance Volunteer – spend a couple of hours a week or a month reaching out to frail elders over the phone. Telephone Reassurance takes place at our Jamaica Plain office, Monday through Friday from 9 to 5.
Intern Program Volunteers – Two full time resident interns will devote one year of their lives to our mission and working directly with our elders. Interns are matched with 20 to 30 elders with whom they maintain regular contact. Interns also take part in the planning and implementation of all of our year round programs.
Board & Committee Volunteers – Volunteers looking to share their knowledge and leadership skills are welcome to join our Board of Directors and the working Board Committees (Program, Fundraising/Event, Finance). The board meets monthly September through June.
Scheduling and time commitments for committees will vary.
Office Volunteer - If you have a few hours during the week to help with a few odds and ends around the office, we have a variety of tasks available to you.
